Meena Group Visit to Wuwei cultural site

Meena Pandey attends 2025 Agriculture Green Development Program

I was excited and couldn’t wait to see what the next few weeks had in store during my visit to China.

My first stop was at Gansu Agricultural University in Northwestern China where I presented the poster carousel. As we transitioned to each lecture on agricultural challenges that called for a response, we had the opportunity to visit different Agricultural Science & Technology Innovation Center and Agricultural Experimental Station with cutting-edge research on water-saving irrigation technologies, including advanced drip and mulch systems, UAV (drone) controlled agricultural practices, next-generation diversified cropping system, nutrient use efficiency and so on.

I also visited China Agricultural University in Beijing, got the opportunity to work in groups of different nationalities to ideate on how we can integrate crop diversity benefits with farmers’ requirements to design sustainable and diversified cropping systems readily used for the farmers. In addition, there were several sessions on soil carbon and nitrogen cycling, with a focus on the biogeochemical processes of carbon sequestration in the context of climate change. Following these sessions, I visited various research centers to explore how long-term crop diversification influences the stability of crop productivity and the cycling of soil carbon and nitrogen.

I was inspired by the seasoned expert's ingenious way to present their research and lecture. By the same token, I plan to study intercropping systems and their impact on soil health, while pursuing transdisciplinary research aligning with the broader goals of sustainable development and food security.

Beyond classroom learning and insightful field visits, we also often head off to explore the breathtaking beauty of China's landmarks like colorful Danxia scenic spot, Summer palace and Great wall of China. Every site we explored was a window to ancient China, and the intricate structures made me eager to dig deeper into its culture and history.

From tasting new dishes to hitting karaoke nights and exploring bustling markets in Beijing, I got a real feel for everyday life in China. On top of everything, I even picked up how to play Mahjong, it was a blast! I developed a deep camaraderie with my Chinese and international friends, and we really clicked right from the start. They were super kind and always had our backs if anything came up.

I’m grateful to UC Davis Global Affairs for nominating me to this summer school, and looking back, it was truly one of the most immersive and rewarding experiences of my life.
