I am a first-generation college graduate from UC Santa Cruz with dual degrees in Environmental Studies/Earth Sciences and Agroecology. Growing up in Los Angeles, I came to realize how inaccessible food was for many in my community and I became determined to educate myself in interdisciplinary studies to understand previous and current agricultural systems. I wanted to be a part of a change that allowed me to work hands-on in growing food and knowing where it went, and my studies and job opportunities at UCSC allowed me to do just that, and greatly shaped both my academic and professional journey.
At UCSC’s Center for Agroecology, I advanced from student staff to Research Manager and up until recently, served as a Sustainable Education Assistant. In these roles, I have managed research projects, facilitated student learning, and collaborated with UC Davis and Cal Poly Pomona on a participatory plant-breeding project called the The Student Collaborative Organic Plant Breeding Education (SCOPE). My work has focused on sustainable farming practices, crop yield research, and food security initiatives for the campus community.
I am continuing my academic career as a first-year student in the International Agricultural Development program and I am looking forward to keeping on learning and applying my knowledge. UCSC has already provided me with many learning opportunities within my passion, and I am eager to learn from my fellow peers, mentors, advisors, and more in this next step of my journey.
