Tamar graduated from Colorado College in 2023 with a degree in Environmental Science. Since she was young she has been involved in various community organizations focused on improving food access and education within St.Louis and Colorado Springs. Through participation in these programs, Tamar became very passionate about helping provide better locally grown food to families within her community and helping them learn how to cook healthier meals. This led to an interest in easing the financial burden off small farmers when adopting sustainable practices to help increase access to locally grown food for low-income families. Through her studies abroad in Thailand and talking to farmers in Colorado, it is evident that there are fewer incentives or assistance given to small sustainable farming operations. Leading to these operations being very expensive to maintain which also limits who can access services provided by them. Tamar believes that in order to increase access to food and decrease the presence of food deserts there needs to be a focus on developing programs and opportunities for small farmers. Tamar would like to help increase access to how to assess soil health to farmers as well as work with farmers to understand how climate stress has affected the growth and ecology of crops over time. Through the Bonner program, Tamar was able to work with organizations such as Food to Power, which actively strives to decrease food insecurity and promote food sovereignty within the Colorado Springs area. Through her work with this organization, she helped co-produce a video series and a GIS map that helped depict how accessible grocery stores are to low-income neighborhoods.
Tamar grew up in St.Louis, Missouri. She enjoys traveling and can be found walking around and exploring new things to do within her city. After college, she worked as an assistant language teacher in Japan, helping students with their English and offering a cross-cultural exchange. Tamar is enthusiastic about sustainable farming and increasing education on how to eat locally and seasonally. She was involved in the Colorado College farm, which grew food for the school and hosted various activities to help teach students how to cook and grow their own food. Tamar Can be found reading a book or on a beach.
