Overview of Funding

Applicants should understand that funding is limited and competitive. Admitted students should expect to fund a significant portion (if not all) of their school related costs.

Internal Fellowships and Scholarships

The Office of Graduate Studies administers several fellowship programs. These  provide financial support for tuition, fees, stipends, research, and travel. New students apply for internal fellowships when they apply for admission. These campus wide fellowship are highly competitive.  The deadline to apply for these is December 15.  Awards are announced around March 15. All domestic students must also file a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) to receive any form of fellowship support.

Continuing students can aso apply for funding to defray tuition, fees, research and travel costs. The following is a list of sources commonly tapped by IAD students. Deadlines and requirements vary – please research opportunities that are relevant to your area of work.

Teaching Assistantships (TA) and Readers

A TA or a Reader appointment of 25% (10 hours per week) up to 50% (20 hours per week) provides a monthly salary and all but $250+ in-state fee remission. Non-resident tuition fee remission is not provided with a TA appointment per campus policy. Students may identify and apply for these by contacting departments that hire TAs and Readers, and responding to postings on the Handshake.

Graduate Student Researcher (GSR)

A GSR appointment of 25% (10 hours per week) up to 50% (20 hours per week) provides a student with a monthly salary and fee remissions for non-resident tuition (NRT) and in-state fees. Students may identify and apply for these by contacting faculty directly about GSR opportunities, and responding to postings on the IAD Graduate Group listserv, and responding to postings on the Handshake.

External Funding

Diverse external funding opportunities are available. Graduate Studies has a webpage dedicated to many search engines here. Enrolled students will also receive the GradLink and GSA Weekly Update e-newsletters, which list external funding sources. Students are encouraged to confer with advisors, major professors and other professors and peers as well.

Financial Aid

Students can obtain information on student loans, grants, and work-study employment at the Financial Aid Office. All domestic students must file a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) to receive any form of fellowship support.  FAFSA-awarded financial aid is not available to international students.

Tuition and Fees

The current year's student fees are available from the Office of Resource Management and Planning. For a current schedule of tuition and fees, click here.

Domestic students may establish residency in one year; however, international students are subject to nonresident tuition in each quarter of registration. In state educational fees for students on 25% or greater research assistant ship positions are paid as part of the research assistant ship. Nonresident tuition fee waivers are available on a competitive basis for both domestic and international students.
