Writing a Teaching Statement for the Academic Job Market
Monday, October 28, 2024
12:10-1:10 pm
Location: Zoom
To register, visit: https://bit.ly/FallGraduateWorkshopsWhy do you teach? How do you teach? How do you measure your effectiveness? Most academic job applications require applicants to address these questions in a Statement of Teaching Philosophy (SoTP). Developing a SoTP can help you clarify your goals as an educator and reflect on how you teach. In this hands-on workshop, participants will learn strategies to write a compelling SoTP. Participants should bring a draft of their own SoTP to the workshop to review and revise. Participants are also encouraged to access and complete the self-paced online module, “Developing a Statement of Teaching Philosophy for Academic Job Applications” prior to attending the session.

Like it or not, generative AI is already in our classrooms and on our students’ devices. As instructors, how can we educate ourselves about the capabilities and limitations of generative AI in order to help our students make informed, ethical decisions about how and when to engage with generative AI (if at all)? In this workshop, we will explore how generative AI works, review some of the ethical considerations around the development and use of this technology, and apply a learning outcomes-oriented approach to understanding the impact of generative AI in the classroom. Along the way, we will also discuss recent survey data on student perceptions and usage of generative AI, and potential implications for classroom policy and practices.

24-25 Updated Mentorship Flyer.doc
MANRRS chapter has begun recruiting both mentors and mentees for our annual mentorship program! The program begins in Winter 2025. It is virtual-based (with optional in-person socials), a relatively low time commitment and allows students to meet with mentors at least 3x per quarter. The program is geared towards Undergraduates, Graduates and Professionals in agriculture, natural resources and related science fields. The program will consist of a brief orientation (via Zoom) on what successful mentorship can look like, and pairs undergraduate student mentees with either graduate student or industry mentors based on interest/area of expertise. Mentorship pairs must also meet 3 times (at minimum) during Winter quarter, and will have the option to continue in Spring. This is an incredible opportunity for undergraduate students to learn the value of mentorship; and for graduate students to contribute to the personal and professional development of their fellow Aggies!
Please feel free to forward this information to your relative mailing lists and/or contacts so that those interested in agriculture, natural resources and related sciences can join us in setting up UC Davis students for success! Our program flyer is attached, and I have included relevant links down below. For any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to reach out to me via email at Larobles@ucdavis.edu.
